There are two types of spray foam, open-cell & closed-cell. Each has their own advantages and uses.
Open-Cell spray foam is made up of tiny bubbles that are partially open which makes for a very soft, flexible product. But this can also make it possible for the foam to hold water, so it is not ideal for use in basements or attics where it can come in contact with moisture. Open-cell foam has just over half the R-value of closed-cell, but double the sound proofing qualities.
Closed-Cell foam is made up of solid foam bubbles that have incredible strength as a whole, strong enough to walk across with causing almost any damage. It is rigid, durable and long lasting. Closed-cell foam has a higher R-value which means it has better insulating qualities and can also nearly double the racking strength of a wall. This is ideal for tightly sealing air and moisture leaks and preventing heat loss or absorbtion.
